In a shocking case of educational fraud, 23 students have accused a Skill Institute in Thane of cheating them out of ₹33.17 lakh. The institute, located near Thane Railway Station, had promised a three-year government-certified nursing course, but neither certificates nor results were provided—even months after the course ended.
According to police reports, most of the students had enrolled after seeing advertisements on social media. After completing their 12th exams, they were lured by the institute’s offer of a recognized nursing program, with guaranteed certification and career prospects. As part of the admission process, the institute collected original documents such as 10th and 12th-grade marksheets, school leaving certificates, and substantial course fees from each student.
The students completed their examinations in May 2024 and were assured results by December. But when the results did not arrive, the institute asked for an additional ₹20,000, citing the need for “registration” with the Maharashtra Nursing Council. Several students paid the extra amount, hoping it would speed up the process. Instead, the institute’s office was shut down shortly afterward, and all phone numbers of the administration went unreachable.
Realizing they had been conned, the students filed complaints at Naupada Police Station. Authorities have confirmed that ₹33.17 lakh was collected under false pretenses and have launched an investigation. A police official stated, “We are verifying the documents and trying to trace the individuals behind the institute.”
This incident is a wake-up call for students and parents to verify the credentials of any institute before enrolling. It also highlights the urgent need for stronger regulatory oversight of private skill training centers operating across Maharashtra.
