Nagpur : Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) is once again moving towards hiring contractual faculty members due to delays in filling regular teaching positions. The university’s Management Council has recently approved the recruitment of over 90 contractual assistant professors.
Despite having 92 approved regular faculty posts, the university has been unable to complete the recruitment process. This has necessitated the appointment of contract-based professors across more than 35 departments and three affiliated colleges.
In many departments, 10 to 15 faculty members are currently serving on a contractual basis. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Law College and Barrister S.K. Wankhede College of Education reportedly have the highest number of contractual faculty members. Similar trends are observed in other departments and colleges under the university.
Faculty appointments are made for two academic sessions based on semester systems, and the professors are compensated on an hourly basis. However, as the sessions end, many professors are compelled to leave due to the lack of permanent positions.
Delays in regular appointments are attributed to past administrative issues, including the suspension of former Vice-Chancellor Dr. Chaudhary and the bifurcation of Laxminarayan Institute of Technology (LIT) into a separate university. These events disrupted the sanctioned recruitment plans.
In the latest development, the university is offering full-time responsibilities and assistant professor status to contractual recruits, who will now be paid a fixed monthly salary of ₹40,000, as per University Grants Commission (UGC) norms. This move aims to bring more accountability and stability within departments and affiliated colleges.
