Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan described the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 as a historic initiative for India’s ideological and mental renaissance, urging all stakeholders to ensure its effective implementation at every level.
Speaking at the inauguration of the new buildings of Mukesh Patel School of Technology Management & Engineering (MPSTME) and Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) in Vile Parle, Mumbai, as well as the foundation ceremony of a new educational complex by Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal (SVKM), Pradhan emphasized the philosophical foundation of India’s new education vision.
“India’s freedom struggle was not just against British rule, but also a battle to infuse Indian values into the education system. The Macaulay education model imposed by the British destroyed traditional Indian knowledge systems and pushed us towards a mindset of servitude. NEP 2020 is a corrective step toward reclaiming our educational roots,” he said.
Also present at the event were Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, NMIMS Chancellor Amrishbhai Patel, SVKM Vice President Bhupeshbhai Patel, MLAs Parag Alwani, Amit Satam, former MLA Kripashankar Singh, Bharat Sanghvi, Jayant Gandhi, faculty, and students.
Pradhan told students, “You are not merely learners — you are warriors of New India. Your contribution to building a developed and self-reliant India is vital.” He also called institutions like NMIMS “beacons of national revival” and said that SVKM must lead in producing talent in commerce, trade, and entrepreneurship.
Chief Minister Fadnavis echoed the sentiment, stating, “In today’s world, the real capital is not money, but people. Industries go where there are skilled workers, innovation, and research. Therefore, building a highly skilled and diverse workforce is critical. Human resource development is the real investment.”
He highlighted NMIMS’s success in establishing a reputation for quality education, transparency in admissions, and global standards. Announcing a new initiative, he said, “With central government support, Maharashtra is launching an ‘EduCity’ project on 250 acres in Navi Mumbai. Top global universities including the University of Aberdeen, University of York, University of Western Australia, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Istituto Europeo di Design will open campuses there. This will bring international education to India, reduce costs, and remove the need for students to go abroad.”
Fadnavis also noted key reforms under NEP, such as increased flexibility and faster curriculum updates. He added that Maharashtra is emerging as a startup hub, with the government creating dedicated funds to support budding entrepreneurs. The state is also reviewing regulations to allow for taller educational buildings and is considering setting up a world-class stadium for youth and students in the region.
This development signals Maharashtra’s commitment to positioning itself as a knowledge and innovation capital in line with NEP’s long-term vision.
