Pune: A shocking incident of campus violence has come to light from one of Pune’s reputed colleges, where a minor argument over checking a name on the result list escalated into a brutal and near-fatal assault. A group of 10 to 15 students allegedly launched a premeditated attack on a fellow student, hitting him multiple times on the head with an iron rod. The victim is currently battling for his life in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of KM Hospital.
The complaint was filed by Irfan Mohammad Husain Karnul (31), a resident of Unity Park, Malikanagar, Kondhwa, Pune, at the Lashkar Police Station. According to his statement, his nephew had gone to the college to check if his friend’s name appeared on the exam results list. While he was scanning the list, he accidentally bumped into another student, leading to a verbal argument.
What started as a minor altercation quickly spiraled into a violent act of group retaliation. After stepping outside the premises, the other student called in a group of 10 to 15 of his associates. Without warning, they ambushed the victim and one of the accused repeatedly struck him on the head — nearly 7 to 8 times — with a heavy iron rod.
The victim collapsed on the spot, unconscious and bleeding profusely. Fortunately, a passerby intervened and managed to snatch the weapon away from the attacker, potentially saving the student’s life. In a semi-conscious state, the injured youth managed to call his maternal uncle and narrate the incident. His uncle rushed to the college, from where he was taken to the hospital.
Doctors at KM Hospital have confirmed that the student suffered multiple head injuries and remains in a critical condition in the ICU. Medical experts have indicated that timely medical attention played a crucial role in saving him, but the next 48 hours remain critical.
Police have launched an investigation into the case and are in the process of identifying and apprehending the accused. The FIR includes charges of attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy, and unlawful assembly. CCTV footage from the campus and nearby areas is being examined, and college authorities are being questioned about campus security and the identity of the attackers.
This incident has sparked widespread concern among students, parents, and education activists in the city. Student safety on college campuses, especially in reputed institutions, is now under the scanner. Parents’ groups have demanded strict action against the attackers and accountability from college administration for failing to prevent such a violent act.
