LONDON: In a landmark initiative to spotlight caste discrimination and champion social justice, the SOAS Ambedkar Society at the SOAS University of London has announced the inaugural London Anti-Caste Film Festival, set to be held from April 25 to 27, 2025. The event is being organized to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, a global icon of social equality and reform.
This first-of-its-kind festival will use the transformative power of cinema to explore the deep-rooted issue of caste oppression and promote conversations around equality, dignity, and justice. The initiative is being spearheaded by the SOAS Ambedkar Society in collaboration with SOAS South Asia Institute, LSE Ambedkar Society, Students’ Federation of India (SFI) UK, and India Labour Solidarity.
Abhishek Bhosle, President of the SOAS Ambedkar Society and a doctoral researcher, shared the festival’s vision: “This festival is a crucial step in bringing critical conversations around caste to a wider audience in the UK. Through powerful storytelling, we aim to highlight both historical and ongoing struggles against caste-based discrimination.”
The festival will showcase a strong lineup of critically acclaimed films that delve into the experiences of marginalized communities and the complexities of caste in contemporary and historical India. Featured films include:
Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar by Jabbar Patel
Fandry by Nagraj Manjule
Kaala by Pa. Ranjith
Court by Chaitanya Tamhane
Jai Bhim Comrade by Anand Patwardhan
Held at the SOAS University of London, the festival aims to serve as a platform for learning, reflection, and solidarity. It invites students, scholars, activists, and members of the public to engage with narratives that challenge inequality and promote a vision of a just society.
