In a welcome shift from recent placement trends dominated by the IT sector, India’s core engineering industries—mechanical, civil, electrical, and electronics—are witnessing a steady surge in hiring. This renewed momentum is offering a much-needed boost to engineering graduates looking to build careers in their specialized domains.
According to the Wheebox India Skills Report 2024, employability rates in core engineering branches have seen marked improvement. Mechanical engineering graduates now report a 54.86% employability rate, while civil engineering follows closely at 54.31%. Electrical and electronics engineering students are faring even better, with employability rates rising to 57.69% and 58.91% respectively.
This upswing is largely driven by the Indian government’s aggressive push for infrastructure development. Projects under initiatives such as Smart Cities, high-speed rail corridors, metro expansions, and renewable energy have created demand for skilled civil and electrical engineers. Simultaneously, the ‘Make in India’ campaign and Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes have stimulated the manufacturing sector, reviving opportunities for mechanical and electronics graduates.
Another key factor contributing to this trend is the rise of Global Capability Centers (GCCs) set up by multinational corporations in India. These centers are focusing not just on IT services but also on research, design, and engineering, creating high-quality jobs in core technical domains.
Industry experts believe this resurgence validates the importance of foundational engineering disciplines in building sustainable technologies and infrastructure. Many recruiters are now seeking engineers with not just academic knowledge but also hands-on skills in design, automation, and sustainable practices.
Educational institutions are responding by realigning curricula, introducing interdisciplinary electives, and enhancing industry collaborations. The focus is now shifting from pure theory to application-based learning that aligns with current industry needs.
As India’s engineering landscape diversifies, graduates in core sectors are once again finding themselves in demand. With policy support, innovation, and improved skilling, the future of core engineering in India looks brighter than it has in years.
