In a landmark development for global education, the University of Southampton, one of the United Kingdom’s most prestigious institutions, has announced plans to launch its first Indian campus in New Delhi by 2025. This move marks a significant step in the globalization of higher education and aligns with India’s New Education Policy (NEP) that encourages international universities to establish a local presence.
The proposed campus will offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs in key disciplines including Computer Science, Engineering, Business, Economics, and Law. The university aims to bring UK-quality education to Indian soil, making global standards more accessible and affordable for Indian students.
Speaking about the initiative, Vice-Chancellor Professor Mark E. Smith said, “India is a strategic partner in global education. With this new campus, we aim to empower Indian students with cutting-edge knowledge, research opportunities, and international exposure—without the need to travel abroad.”
The India campus will follow a hybrid curriculum model, combining Southampton’s academic rigor with region-specific relevance. It is expected to house world-class infrastructure, faculty exchange programs, research collaborations, and offer students the chance to transfer or study a semester in the UK.
This move comes amid increasing demand from Indian students for foreign degrees and a push from the Indian government to host top-tier international institutions. The University of Southampton will join the ranks of other foreign universities such as Deakin and University of Wollongong, which have already announced plans to set up campuses in India.
Admissions for the first batch are expected to begin in early 2025, with more details on courses, fees, and eligibility to be announced in the coming months.
