New Delhi: The journey to India’s most prestigious engineering colleges is set to begin once again, as the JEE Advanced 2025 will be held on May 18. The application process for the exam starts April 23 and continues till May 2, exclusively for those who qualified in JEE Main.
This year, 2,50,236 students have qualified to appear for JEE Advanced. However, with only 17,740 seats available across all IITs, the competition remains intense—nearly 14 aspirants are fighting for every single seat. Despite qualifying, around 80,000 students often skip the exam, many of whom secure good branches in NITs or IIITs through JEE Main and choose not to go through the Advanced process.
JEE Advanced is not just a gateway to IITs, but also to several other reputed institutions. These include the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, seven IISERs, IIST Thiruvananthapuram, RGIPT Raebareli, IIPE Visakhapatnam, and the Indian Maritime University in Kolkata. In recent years, even top foreign universities like the University of Cambridge and National University of Singapore (NUS) have begun accepting JEE Advanced ranks for select programs.
This year, the exam is being conducted by IIT Kanpur. Though there is often speculation among students about which IIT is setting the paper and whether it affects the difficulty level, experts clarify that the paper is prepared by a joint committee, not by the organising IIT alone. Future editions will be conducted by IIT Roorkee (2026) and IIT Delhi (2027).
Interestingly, over the past seven years, the number of IIT seats has increased by 46.85%, a move aimed at expanding access to top-tier engineering education. But even with the increase in seats, the demand continues to surge, keeping JEE Advanced one of the most competitive exams in the country.
